I have a doctorate in Clinical Psychology and have provided services since 1992. I am licensed in the State of California and a member of the American Psychological Association. I have worked in a variety of mental health clinics and hospitals, and have treated clients diverse in ethnicity, age, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, gender, and life circumstances.
As a clinical psychologist, I frequently treat individuals with histories of trauma/abuse, depression, anxiety/fear/panic, relationship problems, career issues, grief/loss, and other concerns like loneliness, personal growth, low self-esteem, and dealing with the effects of growing up in a dysfunctional family. My areas of specialty include substance use problems, addictions, and recovery; compulsive sexual behavior; coming out/sexual orientation issues; and HIV/AIDS-related issues.
In my work with couples I often focus on communication problems, dysfunctional patterns, sexual problems, infidelity/trust, and issues that leave couples feeling less connected, harmonious, and satisfied with their relationship. I work with families to address a variety of concerns including behavior problems, parent/child conflicts, life transitions (eg. divorce, re-marriage, and blended family issues), and parenting skills.
My approach to treatment draws from psychodynamic, systems, and cognitive-behavioral theory. I tailor my approach depending on your goals, how long you want to be in therapy, and the severity of the issues involved. My style is warm, engaging, and goal-oriented. I am told that my style is a welcome change for the client whose previous therapist “didn’t say much”, “didn’t offer feedback”, or just “listened to me talk and didn’t help me get anywhere.”
